Hurricane Helene - Offices Closing

HURRICANE HELENE

 

With the coming of Hurricane Helene today, DHA's Office will close at 1:00 PM.  There will be no DHA activities with residents or youth this afternoon.  The offices will also be closed tomorrow and reopen on Monday.  DHA will have a Maintenance Technician on site in Decatur for emergencies only.  Please report any emergencies to DHA's Rental Offices.  Your call will be redirected to the after-hours service.  Please follow the recommended actions of local authorities to be safe and smart in your homes.  Please expect power outages and other inconveniences that will occur due to the storm.

Storm Preparations for Hurricane Helene

The National Weather Service forecasts that Tropical Storm Helene will reach the metro Atlanta area on Thursday, September 26. The City of Decatur is expected to experience strong winds, heavy rain, and possible flooding, which may lead to downed trees and power outages.

On Tuesday, September 24, public works crews cleared storm drains across the city before the storm arrived. Preparations are now underway to ensure City resources are ready to respond to the needs of the Decatur community.

Due to the inclement weather, all City buildings, including City Hall and Parks and Recreation facilities, are closed on Thursday, Sept. 26, and Friday, Sept. 27. All programs and events are canceled.  There will be NO CHANGES to sanitation services for Thursday, Sept. 26.

        Georgia Power's interactive Outage Map provides near real-time information, allowing users to see where outages occur across the state and track estimated restoration times. 

        Customers can visit www.GeorgiaPower.com/Storm, to check their contact information is updated to receive Outage Alerts, report and check the status of outages, and access useful safety tips and information. Customers can also report and check the status of an outage 24 hours a day by contacting Georgia Power at 888-891-0938.

  • Register now or update your Smart911 profile at Smart911.com. You can opt-in for severe weather and other notifications and create or update your profile with any special medical concerns (such as a household member who uses medical equipment that requires electricity).
  • Avoid parking on the street to keep roadways clear for emergency vehicles, when possible. 
  • Charge all cell phones and use fresh batteries in emergency radios. Text messages are more reliable than phone calls when contacting loved ones. 
  • Secure patio and lawn furniture.
  • Download the FEMA smartphone app for additional tips and emergency information.
  • Check on the seniors in your neighborhood and bring all pets inside.

During a Storm

  • Take safe shelter inside a sturdy building away from windows and doors. 
  • Avoid contact with conductors of electricity - appliances, metal objects, and water.

After a Storm

  • Never touch any downed or low-hanging wire, including telephone or TV wires that touch a power line. 
  • Never pull tree limbs from power lines yourself or enter areas with debris or downed trees, as downed power lines may be buried in wreckage. 
  • Call 911 and Georgia Power immediately if they see a fallen or low-hanging power line.
